About Us
First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, Tennessee, is a family of faith and fellowship of believers who teach, preach, and practice a medium Gospel that transforms lives and blesses people.
First Cumberland is truly a place where people of a great variety of backgrounds can “meet in the middle.” People from a variety of church, religious, and social traditions call First Cumberland home. While some of us are life-long Cumberlands, many others of us have come into the fellowship from Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, Catholic, and other faith traditions.
In worship you’ll find us a happy medium between what’s known as “high church” and “low church.” We are deeply reverent but not stuffy; down to earth but focused on Christ in all that we do, say, and sing. We believe that the words we say in worship are important, and that’s why as a rule we say what we believe by using the Apostles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. Our worship music comes from a broad spectrum of sources. It isn’t at all unusual for us to sing an “old standard” hymn, a more modern praise song, and to enjoy a fine piece of classical music all in the same worship service.
Our worship is enhanced by the addition of our new Allen Renaissance R-230 sanctuary organ, which was dedicated on Easter Sunday 2006. Our preaching is always based on the Holy Scriptures and always speaks to the human condition and our dependence on God in all parts of life. Our prayers during worship are both private and public. We are given the opportunity to worship and pray in silence as well as speaking our concerns to one another.
We believe that our service to the community is a vital part of our life and worship. Many members of our church are deeply involved in the civic, business, and governmental affairs of our area. Our church is also actively involved in Habitat for Humanity, Bradley Initiative for Church and Community, The Caring Place, and other ministries that mirror our concerns for men and women of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and condition.
Our internal ministries, such as our Chancel Choir, Youth ministry, LOGOS activities, Bible study classes, Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry, the Joy Club, and other organized groups help us to grow, serve, and worship as individuals and as parts of the greater Body of Christ.
We truly seek to be the Hands and Feet of Christ in Bradley County, Cleveland, and the world. You are cordially invited to come and join us in work, worship, and service. God Bless!
